Many of the most prestigious universities in England have excellent postgraduate programs as well. Many people will do their bachelor’s work in their native country and then travel to England in order to finish their degrees, especially if they are receiving degrees in English, History, business, or medicine. England is known for their quality education and their devotion to pushing the minds of their students to their fullest potential.
In England, at the post graduate level, there are several different types of degrees and certificates that you can obtain during your studies. Here are the types of post graduate degrees that you may pursue.
Master’s degrees are offered in England at both the graduate and the undergraduate levels. Undergraduate Master’s Degrees are done in conjunction with a bachelor’s degree, and take a total of 4 years. Postgraduate Master’s Degrees are taken after an undergraduate degree has been completed, and take approximately a year to complete. Here are some (but not all) of the different Master’s degrees that you can obtain while studying in England; the university which you are considering will determine which of these degree programs are offered.
- Ancient History
- Theology or Religion
- Medical fields (all types)
- Arts (Film, music, fine art)
- English (literature, linguistics, etc)
- History (of any type)
- Sciences (Biology, Biochemistry, Astronomy, etc)
- Any language
- Social Sciences (sociology, psychology)
As mentioned above, postgraduate Master’s Degrees only take about a year, unless you are performing research as part of your Master’s program (then it may take you 18 months to 2 years). Master’s degrees give you the opportunity to continue the studies that you started in your Bachelor’s program, but with the ability to focus on the aspects of that degree that you are truly interested in. Having your Master’s degree shows that you have a higher understanding of your area of expertise. Many people will pursue their Master’s Degree in England, because they wish to get a different world view and because of the expertise that is available in many of the England’s Universities.
Master’s of Business Administration (MBA) Degrees
These degrees are recognized around the world as a way to say that you have the skills you need for a successful career in the business world. Several universities offer MBA courses of different types. These courses could include business policy, business strategy, operational and strategic management, marketing, market research, international business, finance, accounting, international trade, informational technologies, human resources, and leadership courses.
Which types of courses that you will need for your MBA will depend on which university you decide to attend and what your MBA’s focus is on; their business school and/or your faculty advisor will be able to assist you with those sorts of things. Getting an MBA in England is a great idea, because business is a large part of England’s economy, and many great businessmen have started by getting their MBA’s at England universities.
Doctorate Degrees (PhD, DPhil, EdD)
England is also a popular location for those who are looking to obtain their doctorate. Doctorates are the highest academic level that anyone can achieve. People who work to obtain doctorates often end up working in academic and/or research fields (unless they are doctors or practicing law). These programs are incredibly intense; you can complete a doctorate program in three years if you are studying in England (this differs from countries such as the United States, where you can end up taking up to seven years to complete a PhD program). If you have accepted academic success during your undergraduate program, you can apply for a PhD program. In England, you do not have to have a Master’s degree before pursuing a PhD, but most people will in order to better prepare for the program.
Other Postgraduate Certificates
At England universities, there are a variety of other certificates that you can obtain without having to invest the full-time commitment that you would if you were pursuing a Master’s or Doctorate degree. Postgraduate certificates are available for study at many schools that offer postgraduate degrees, and they can help you build on the expertise you already have or give you the qualifications you may not have had otherwise. Some professions and vocations offer postgraduate qualifications that can help you in the workforce. If you decide that you don’t want to stay in the field you studied during your undergraduate degree, you can also opt to take conversion courses in England, which will allow you to take courses related to the field you want to study during postgraduate studies.
